We are happy to help debunk these falsehoods and help people learn the truth about orthodontic health!
Common Myths About Traditional Braces:
Myth: “Wire braces can lock together when two people kiss!”
The Truth: This myth has been around for decades, despite being 100% untrue. Don’t worry, braces that are applied properly and cared for correctly will not pose a threat when you lock lips.
Myth: “I will set off alarms and metal detectors if I walk through with traditional braces.”
The Truth: Nope! The modern, lightweight metals used to make braces will absolutely not set off alarms or metal detectors.
Myth: “Wire braces will eventually start to rust if you wear them long enough.”
The Truth: This is also untrue. In fact, the titanium alloy used in modern braces does not rust.
Myth: “Braces are only for kids.”
The Truth: Straighter smiles are not just for children. In fact, more than a million adults in the United States currently have braces and nearly 50% of Pavlik Orthodontic patients are over eighteen years old!
Myth: “I will no longer be able to play sports if I get braces.”
The Truth: False! You can play any sport you want, just make sure you use a proper mouth guard.
Common Myths About Invisalign®:
Myth: “Invisalign® costs more than getting traditional braces.”
The Truth: Actually, the cost of Invisalign® treatment is based on the number of aligners needed on a per-patient basis, as well as the total amount of treatment time. This can be less expensive or more expensive than traditional braces, depending on your individual needs.
Myth: “Invisalign® can only help people whose teeth just need minor corrections.”
The Truth: While it is true that aligners work differently than traditional braces, they can actually correct nearly all of the same problems. It doesn’t matter if your teeth are crooked, have gaps, or are even twisted — you may still be a good candidate for Invisalign®!
Myth: “The aligners will change the way I talk.”
The Truth: It’s true that, for some patients, there will be a brief period of adjustment when they first get Invisalign®. However, within a few days, the tongue gets used to the feel of the aligners and speech returns to normal!
Myth: “Teeth straightening with Invisalign® takes longer than traditional braces.”
The Truth: How long it takes to straighten teeth actually depends entirely on the position of the teeth and the type of corrections needed. In some cases, Invisalign® can work more quickly than traditional braces!
