For those looking to land a romantic partner, it turns out that a great set of pearly whites can make all the difference. According to a recent online survey conducted by MarketTools Inc. on thousands of single Americans, results showed that, when judging a potential date, single Americans ranked having healthy, attractive teeth as the highest “must have” on the list. That’s right, nice teeth topped the list of dating requirements for both men and women!

Among hundreds of comments left in the survey’s open response area regarding why healthy, attractive teeth were important to them in a partner, responses included, “Teeth are very important in a potential date because how you take care of your teeth is a good indicator of overall hygiene,” as well as “From a Darwinian perspective, good teeth are a real indication of your health — how much you drink, smoke, and what you’re eating.”

Perhaps because of the importance having attractive teeth can have in a person’s dating life, many more adult Americans each year are opting to undergo orthodontic treatment to improve their appearance and boost their overall confidence. And studies show that, on the whole, they are pretty thrilled with the results of their orthodontic treatment.

In a study done by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), it was discovered that 75 percent of the adults they surveyed reported improvements in their personal relationships following orthodontic treatment — improvements that they attributed to their improved confidence and more attractive post-orthodontic smile. As a result of this increase in self-confidence and improved personal relationships, 92 percent of these survey respondents remarked that they would highly recommend orthodontic treatment to other adults who needed it.

So, whether you’re looking for love or are just looking to gain a healthier, happier smile, it’s clear that orthodontic treatment is something to consider if you currently have teeth you’re less than thrilled with.
